Electric vehicle sales are on the rise due to state by state legislation forcing automakers to produce EV alternatives to their vehicles. Plug in EV sales are up 50% so far in 2014 and up 90% over last May’s sales. This legislative push has brought some amazing vehicles to the forefront and we wanted to make sure you were familiar with a few of them.

Kia Soul EV
The Kia Soul EV is slated to make its debut in the fall of 2014, boasting a range of 92 miles and top speeds near 90 MPH. It resembles a small SUV so you can fit the family and groceries into your EV.

BMW i8
This made the list based on its plug-in ability and incredible style, but its pure electric range is a feeble 22 miles. It makes up for that with its 362 hp that can take you from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, all while providing 90MPGe.

Mercedes B-Class
Mercedes never disappoints its fans. The sleek B-Class has the power you’d expect in a Mercedes along with an electric range of 85 miles. It will be a force to be reckoned with.

Citroen C1 with Phinergy battery
Hold on to your hats. Citroen, along with Alcoa and Phinergy, have developed a lithium-ion battery with range extending, with the capacity to reach 1000 miles! It may just revolutionize the entire EV market.

Scientists are finally getting through to politicians that carbon emissions are causing big problems to our planet. The Multi-State ZEV Action Plan was released a few days ago to help limit those carbon emissions by putting 3.3 million zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road by 2025. The 8 states that have made this pledge are California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Oregon. Together they make up about one quarter of U.S. car sales each year.

This plan includes 11 main results they are hoping to reach and also the plans to attain them. The results consist of three main categories; expanding the market of ZEVs, improving the experience of manufacturing and purchasing ZEVs for automakers and consumers, and regulating the codes and standards of the ZEV market.

ZEVs include plug-in hybrids, battery electric and hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles. As of May, 2014, manufacturers have rolled out more than 20 models in these categories as they continue to build the market and demand. Currently there are over 200,000 ZEVs nationwide.
